The invention relates to the use of linear and/or branched polyethylene oxide homopolymers, polypropylene oxide homopolymers and/or polyethylene/propylene oxide copolymers with statistically distributed ethylene oxide and propylene oxide units which can be partly or fully etherified with C1-C4-alkanoles and have a mean molecular mass of more than 1,000 to 8,000, for reducing the clear varnish wetting limit during double-layer varnishing with an aqueous base varnish/clear varnish. The invention also relates to suitable base varnishes.
