The invention relates to an airbag module with a multistage gas generator, comprising an airbag and an airbag cover which is arranged over the airbag and which is opened by the airbag when the latter is deployed. The invention is characterised by the combination of an airbag (5) which in its inoperative state is folded in such a way that after the gas generator (3) has been ignited, it is successively pulled out of the housing (2) of the airbag module (1) by the gases discharged from the gas generator, an airbag cover (7, 12, 13, 19, 23) and/or a part (24) that acts on the folded airbag (5), which are configured in such a way that once the airbag cover (7, 12, 13, 19, 23) has opened, from a predetermined point onwards, increasingly greater forces are required to deploy the airbag (5). As a result of the invention, the volume of the airbag can be more economically adapted to the ignition stages of the gas generator.
