Ceramic monolith is inserted in air intake channel of internal combustion engine to prevent flame outlet where engine works in ambiance with explosion risk

The internal combustion engine has an air intake channel (3) which at least at times during the combustion cycle is connected with a combustion chamber. In the air intake channel a ceramic monolith (10) is fitted with air cross-sections formed by through passage channels (10a), via which the air is conducted to the engine. At least a part of the through passage channels is closed at the suction-side end and has a cross-section surface of 1 to 4 mm<2>. The total air cross-section within the monolith amounts to virtually 40 per cent of its total cross-section. In front of the monolith an air filter is fitted.
