A display (20) includes an emulsion (22) containing an electrically switchable hologram that is illuminated from a light source (24). A pattern of electrodes (30) placed adjacent the emulsion directs light into different modes (26, 28) of the hologram. The emulsion material is made of the monomer dipentaerythritol hydroxypentaacrylate, a liquid crystal, a cross-linking monomer, a coinitiator and a photoinitiator dye. The polymer-dispersed liquid crystal material may optionally further comprise a surfactant. A color display can be created by aligning separate holograms that are optimized for red, green, or blue light, and simultaneously illuminating the hologram with red, green, and blue light. Alternatively, a color display can be created using a single emulsion (70) containing superimposed on tiled holograms (120) that are optimized to diffract red, green, and blue light in the same direction towards a user.
