The invention relates to an airbag, especially a lateral airbag, pertaining to a motor vehicle (2), comprising an airbag module that consists of at least one airbag (1) that is folded in a non-activated position and extends lengthwise along a lateral inner edge of the roof, a gas generator enabling the airbag (1) to be inflated, and fixing means (3) that provide an outlet (4) for the air bag (1) that unfolds in a direction of expansion (E) when the gas generator is activated. The fixing means (3) are connected to the motor vehicle (2) and surround the folded airbag (1) at least partially at certain fixing points (5). Known lateral airbags are connected to the motor vehicle (2) above the airbag (1). As a result, the inner edge of the roof is relatively thick. The aim of the invention is to avoid this. This is achieved by connecting the fixing means (3) to the motor vehicle (2) via at least one connecting element (6) that penetrates the airbag module and is placed in between an upper edge of the folded airbag (1) and the outlet (4).
