Production of a kava extract, is new and comprises extracting kava Piper methysticum plant material with carbon dioxide (CO2) at high pressure, contacting the extract with particulate gamma -alumina to remove flavokavins and removing the CO2. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) apparatus (I) for carrying out the process, comprising: (a) a pressure-tight extraction vessel into which CO2 can be introduced under high pressure and from which a CO2-containing extract stream can be withdrawn; and (b) a zone for treating the CO2-containing extract stream with gamma -alumina, where the zone is located either within the extraction vessel or in a separate pressure-tight vessel connected to the extraction vessel; and (2) a kava extract (II) obtained using the method, especially one that contains kavapyrones as active ingredients, is at least partly crystalline, and is practically free of flavokavins. |
