PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To secure the adhesibility between a cast slab under solidifying process and a water-cooled copper plate for cooling the cast slab and to execute the width change of mold short sides during casting so as not to apply excessive load to the cast slab under solidifying process, at the time of driving the width change of the mold short sides in a continuous caster. SOLUTION: Hybrid actuators integrally composed of motors 9, hydraulic pumps 8, hydraulic cylinders 6, 7 and position detectors 12 for cylinder rod, are set at the upper part and the lower part of the mold short side 3 (4) in the continuous caster and reaction force from the cast slab under solidifying process in the mold is detected with the hybrid actuator. The mold short side 3, (4) is driven so that the contact pressure between the short side and the cast slab becomes constant, to execute the width change of the mold short side during casting.
