PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader that can obtain a read image with high quality by suppressing temperature fluctuation of an LED in the case that a removable scanner head is mounted on the image reader. SOLUTION: In this image reader, when a head replacement switch is depressed, whether or not preheating is conducted is discriminated. In the case that the preheating is conducted, the preheating is terminated and whether or not the preheating is conducted for 40 sec or over is discriminated. In the case that the preheating is not conducted for 40 sec or over, a setting time of 10 min is set to an interruption timer. On the other hand, in the case that the preheating is conducted for 40 sec or over, the interruption timer is cleared and then restarted. Whether or not the head replacement switch is depressed is discriminated again, and in the case that the head replacement switch is depressed, whether or not a head is a scanner head is discriminated. In the case that the head is not the scanner head, the processing is finished without any further operation, and in the case that the head is the scanner head, the preheating is conducted.
