PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize a bright semitransparent reflective display device which keeps a display in an easy-to-see picture even if a negative/positive reversal occurs. SOLUTION: A polarizing plate 14 is provided on the upper side of a TN liquid crystal panel 10 and on its lower side, a light scattering body 15 and a polarized light separator 16 are provided in this order. The polarized light separator 16 transmits a linearly polarized light component of an incident light from the upper side, being in parallel with the plane of the figure, reflects its another linearly polarized light component, being perpendicular to the same and emits a linearly polarized light component of an incident light from the lower side, being in parallel with the plane of the figure, to the upper side. An external incident light on the display device results in a bright display in an off-state being reflected by the polarized light separator 16 and results in a dark display in an on-state passing through the polarized light separator 16. A light from a light source 17 results in a dark display in an off-state passing through the polarized light separator 16 and being absorbed by a polarizing plate 12 and results in a bright display in an on-state passing through both the polarized light separator 16 and the polarizing plate 14. |
