PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent pure color luminance from decreasing due to generation of discrimination of liquid crystal and to prevent relation of complementary colors from going out of balance, in a color image display device provided with color filters and a liquid crystal panel part. SOLUTION: Each picture element electrode concerning the same color of a picture element electrode layer 13 is aligned in a certain direction, and the orientation of liquid crystal molecules in a liquid crystal layer 16 is arranged so that a map projected onto the picture element electrode layer 13 in the direction of the orientation coincides with the alignment direction of the picture element electrode, and thus, each picture element electrode is made to be resistant to be influenced by a lateral electric field generated between the picture element electrodes in the complementary relation with each other. A phase plate 6 is placed between a color filter 3 and a liquid crystal panel 1, and a plane of polarization of s-polarized light component diffracted through the color filter 3 is two-dimensionally rotated so as to form an angle of 45 degrees with the orientation of the liquid crystal molecules, the polarized light modulated and reflected by the liquid crystal panel part 1 is rotated by 135 degrees to be transformed to p-polarized component, and is thereby transmitted through the color filter 3. |
