PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform efficient solid-liquid separation by installing upper and lower thickeners and taking measures for excluding the action of a builder and promoting the sedimentation of particles. SOLUTION: In an upper thickener tank 3, a hollow vertical shaft 6 operated vertically is installed in the central part, an air diffusion pipe 5 having numbers of nozzles is installed at the lower end, and an air source communicates with the pipe 5 from the outside through the shaft 6. An aeration time for aerating the inside of the upper thickener tank 3 thoroughly and a stop time for stopping aeration are set up to be actuated automatically, and the air diffusion pipe 5 has a water spray function to change over air and water freely. A lower thickener tank 18 is mounted freely separably on a vibrator frame 21 and receives every batch of precipitated sludge falling from the upper thickener tank 3. Every time of the reception of the sludge, the frame 21 is vibrated for a prescribed time to accelerate the sedimentation/separation of the sludge, and supernatant is discharged/removed to house only concentrated sludge for a day.
