PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve running performance or the like during idling in a variable valve system engine provided with the intake valve of a solenoid driving system to control the quantity of intake air by controlling the closing time of the intake valve. SOLUTION: A basic target idling air quantity Qm at the time of full accelerator closing is calculated by idling rotational speed feedback control and an auxiliary machine load correction (S1). At the full accelerator closing time, the basic target idling air quantity Qm is compared with an actual air quantity Qa, and a correction value (density equivalent value) KL=Qa/Qm is calculated (S2 to S5). A target idling air quantity Qmv=Qm/KL is calculated based on the basic target idling air quantity Qm and the correction value KL (S6). An accelerator requested air quantity Vacc is calculated based on the opening degree of the accelerator (S7). The accelerator requested air quantity Vacc is added to the target idling air quantity Qmv, and a target air quantity Vcyl is calculated (S8). Then, based on the target air quantity Vcyl, an intake valve closing time IVC is calculated and outputted (S9 and S10).
