Aliphatic carboxylic per-acids are prepared by reacting aliphatic carboxylic acids with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of metaboric acid or boric anhydride or mixtures thereof. Preferably at least one mol of metaboric per mol of water or 1 mol of boric anhydride per 3 mols of the water to be eliminated is used, and the orthoboric acid formed may be filtered off, the acid dehydrated and recycled. Performic, peracetic, perpropionic, perbutyric, perisobutyric, perpivalic, perhexanoic and halogenated per acids are mentioned and phosphoric, sulphuric, hydrochloric, or alkyl or arylsulphonic acids may be used as catalysts. |
