PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make a coating material penetrate into recessions on a plated steel plate even when the amount of a solvent to be added is small and the thickness of a coating film is thin and to prevent the generation of an uncoated part by specifying the value of the circumferential velocity ratio between an applicator roll and a pick-up roll. SOLUTION: The lower part of a pick-up roll(PR) 3 is immersed in a coating pan 1 filled with a coating material 2, PR 3 is rotated normally to an applicator roll(AR) 4, a metal plate 6 is moved in the reverse direction to the rotation of AR 4. When the thickness of a coating film is increased, the nip pressures of AR 4 and PR 3 decreased, or the rotational velocity of AR 4 in relation to the traveling velocity of the metal plate 6 is increased, or the rotational velocity of PR 3 is decreased. When the thickness of the coating film is decreased, the operation is done reversely. The coating material 2 taken up by PR 3 is controlled to be a prescribed thickness by contact with AR 4 and stuck on AR 4. The circumferential velocity ratio between AR 4 and PR 3 is adjusted to 2-4, roping is generated in the coating material 2 adherent to AR 4 and transferred to the metal plate 6. In this way, even when the viscosity of the coating material 2 is high and the coating film is thin, the generation of an uncoated part can be prevented.
