PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To quickly sell articles without making it unnecessary for a purchaser to wait even when sold-out merchandise is erroneously selected while maintaining low costs. SOLUTION: This detecting device is provided with a pusher 23 for ejecting the most front articles S, and transferring it to a bucket 31 by pushing forward and moving whole articles housed in an article rack 18 so as to be lined up back and forth, actuator 26 projected to the more forward side than the front edge of the article rack 18, sold-out detection switch 70 provided in the bucket 31 for outputting an electric signal indicating that the articles in the article rack 18 are sold out when pressurized by the actuator 26, and storage means for storing whether or not the articles are sold out for each merchandise rack 18 according to the electric signal outputted from the sold-out detection switch 70.
