In a melt-spinning apparatus of the type in which one or more spinnerets terminate in a rectangular spinning cell, one of the walls of the cell consists, at least partly, of a number of parallel gauze layers, the space behind these gauze layers being connected to an air-supply system, and the two side walls adjoining this gauze wall being directed at right angles to the latter, the gauze layers being positioned one against the other, the layers in the pack thus formed being of different fineness, the fineness decreasing and increasing successively in the direction of flow of the gaseous cooling medium and the gauze wall consisting of an odd number of gauzes of the plain Dutch weave type (as shown in Fig. 4) of which each two are separated by a plurality of layers of a symmetrical gauze of equal fineness in warp and weft directions and arranged in such a manner that the successive layers of this intermediate symmetrical gauze are turned in their plane relative to one another through an acute angle. Preferably, the intermediate layers of gauze are successively turned relatively to each other in the same sense and through the same angle, and preferably through an angle of 30 degrees. The gauze wall 7 as shown (Fig. 2) may comprise three gauzes 8, 8, 8, of the plain Dutch weave type, six symmetrical gauzes (9-14 and 15-20) being provided between each pair of the Dutch gauzes. Suitably the warp of the Dutch gauzes comprises 48 lengths of 0,3 mm. diameter wire and the weft 440 lengths of 0,26 mm. diameter wire, per linear dm., the warp and the weft of the symmetrical gauzes each being made up of 64 lengths of 0,5 mm. diameter wire per linear dm. As shown, air is passed from an air chest 6 into a spinning cell 5 through the gauze wall 7 constructed as previously described. Spinning cell 5 may be provided with a gauze panelled door 27 and strips of asbestos 4 separating it from the spinning head 1. Air-chest 6 may be provided on its underside with an inlet 21 through which the air passes from tube 22. Specifications 533,304 and 853,648 also are referred to.
