PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a polymer having a high hydroxyl equivalent by coupling a bisphenol through oxidation with an oxidizing agent being a peroxide in the presence of an iron complex catalyst. SOLUTION: The bisphenol used is one represented by formula I (wherein R1 is a hydrocarbon group, a substituted hydrocarbon group, an ether group, a thioether group, or a substituted imino group; and n is 0 or 1). The iron complex catalyst desirably used is one represented by formula II (wherein R2 is a divalent hydrocarbon group; R3 and R4 are each independently hydrogen, a hydrocarbon group, or a substituted hydrocarbon group; and R5 and R6 are each independently a hydrocarbon group, a halogen group, a substituted hydrocarbon group, a hydrocarbonoxy group, amino, or a substituted amino). The peroxide used as the oxidizing agent is desirably hydrogen peroxide. It is suitable that the coupling of the bisphenol through oxidation is carried out in the presence of a solvent, which is 1,4-dioxane or the like.
