PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a simple flat plate light source having high luminance, high efficiency and a long service life, in information imaging equipment such as televisions and game machines, etc., office automation equipment such as word processors, etc., and display systems having a built-in light source, using display elements which require backlight such as a transmission liquid crystal panel. SOLUTION: This light source comprises a face plate 10 which is a light emitting surface having light transmissivity, an electrode comprising plural transparent conductive films 20 formed on the inner face of the face plate 10, a light transmittive dielectric layer 30 for covering the part except for the external electrode of the transparent conductive films 20, and an insulating substrate 40 comprising plural discharge paths 50 arranged facing opposite the face plate 10 and in the direction crossing to the transparent conductive film electrode, further partitioning discharge space, and phosphors attached to the inner wall surfaces of the discharge paths 50. Here, the face plate 10 and the substrate 40 are sealed integrally, to seal a rare gas, or the rare gas and mercury in them.
