PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce rate of electrolyte leakage occurrence, enhance capacity and extend service life by providing a spacer, which is arranged on an electrode group and has an electrical insulation property and a nature to absorb an alkaline electrolyte. SOLUTION: A spacer 6 is preferably formed of a nonwoven fabric made of a synthetic resin fiber. Since the spacer 6 can be pushed out from an electrode group 5 by an oxygen gas inevitably generated from a positive electrode 2 at overcharging, or can absorb an alkaline electrolyte which is not completely impregnated into the electrode group 5 due to enhancement of the capacity, the presence of the separated electrolyte on the electrode group 5 can be prevented. As a result, the occurrence of electrolyte leakage can be avoided, when the internal pressure rises due to overcharge or the like. Since the spacer 6 can replenish electrolyte to the electrolyte group 5, it can restrain the electrolyte in separators 3 from being exhausted in conjunction with the progress of charge discharge cycles so that the service life of the battery can be prolonged. |
