PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the degradation in a display image grade even if a voltage impression or non-impression state is continued for a long time by dispersing high-polymer resins into a non-threshold smectic liquid crystal material. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal optical element consists of a light controllable layer 6, two substrates 1 with electrodes which hold this light controllable layer 6 and at least one of which are transparent, and further, a polarizing plate 7 which holds the substrates 1. The light controllable layer 6 consists of 100 pts.wt. non-threshold smectic liquid crystal material 4 and 0.01 to 10 pts.wt. high-polymer resins 5. The smectic liquid crystal material 4 is preferably formed by mixing of an antiferroelectric liquid crystal material and a liquid crystal material having a smectic C phase. The content of the high-polymer resins per 100 pts.wt. liquid crystal material is preferably >=0.1 to <=5 pts.wt., more preferably >=1 to <=3 pts.wt.
