PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To effectively detect incorrect collating even in the case of different printing densities and sheet colors between a printed matter for inputting an inspecting image and a printed matter for inputting a reference image. SOLUTION: The method for detecting incorrect collating comprises the steps of forming an edge reference image B extracted at an edge from a reference image A in the case of detecting the collating based on the image A image- input from a normal printed matter in advance and an inspecting image E image-input from a printed matter in a gathering step, forming an edge inspecting image G extracted at its edge from the image E, comparing the edge inspecting image with the edge reference image, and detecting the collating. Specifically, the method further comprises the steps of mask processing a binary edge reference image C with a binary edge expanded inspecting image I, and mask processing a binary edge inspecting image H with a binary edge expanded reference image D.
