PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress occurrence of a stripe-like reading defect due to an effect of deposited dust or the like on an original read position even when deposition of dust or the like takes place at the original read position in the image reader having provision for the moving original mode. SOLUTION: The image reader consists of a read means 24 that reads image data from an original being a read object, scanning means 22, 23 that emit a light to the original and lead an obtained reflection light to the read means 24, an original carrying means 10 that carries the original up to a light emitting position by the scanning means 22, 23, and a drive means 30 that moves the scanning means 22, 23 in the case that the read means 24 reads image data from the original carried by the original carrying means 10. Then in the case that the read means reads the image data, the drive means also moves position of the scanning means that decide their read position (light emitting position) while moving the original being the read object by using the carrying of the original by the original carrying means.
