PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To inexpensively and securely detect the presence or size of a form such as a recording paper by moving a search member that touches a table surface with a specific pressure while controlling its position, and recognizing the edge and position of the form based on an output signal from a height- detecting means. SOLUTION: The pen tip of a search pen 302 is brought into contact with a specific point A of a table where a recording paper 100 has been set with a specific pressure. Then, the pen tip is moved at a specific speed from the point A to B or from the point A to C. In this case, the point B or C is a position where no recording paper 100 exists in a normal setting of the recording paper. While the search pen 302 is moving from the point A to B or from the point A to C, the height of the search pen 302 is detected by a detector 213, and the height detection signal of the height detector 213 is sampled at each travel for unit amount and is converted from analog to digital before being retained by a control means. A part deviating from the recording paper 100 becomes a steady, low-height position, thus judging the shape of the recording paper.
