PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To measure circularity and diameter of railroad wheel using artificial sense of vision by projecting a compact beam light over a specified distance to cause interference with the flange and the rolling band of a wheel continuously and capturing an image being projected onto an opaque filter. SOLUTION: A wheel 1 to be measured is rolled along a rolling region 2 and sustained in a state centered by means of a guide rail during a measuring process. A compact light source 3 projects a compact beam light which interferes with the flange and the rolling band of the wheel over a distance equal to the boggy wheel base, preferably shorter than that by 200 mm, e.g. a distance of 1.8 m. An image generated by the compact beam light is projected onto an opaque filter 4 and captured by a video camera having an objective lens 5 thence delivered to a computer where it is filed and the diameter of the rolling band is calculated according to a specified formula.
