The franking machine has a horizontal entry slot for the envelope (6) which is clamped by a vertically mobile plate (3) against a fixed top plate (2) which has a window (2') facing the ink jets (1). A detector (10) senses the insertion of the envelope to start the clamping mechanism. A motorized rake (4) moves the envelope transversely into the printing position.
