LICENCE PLATE SYSTEM AND METHOD OF MANUFACTURE

A licence plate and method for manufacture whereby a licence plate blank (a, b) is conditioned to receive desired licence images by digital transfer means configured to receive the blank, the transfer means causing the formation of the representations of the desired images on the blank, according to predetermined criteria. The blank (a, b) may comprise a transparent or an opaque substrate (10, 20) and may be conditioned by reducing surface roughness. The invention extends to a licensing system in which such plates are applied, the system including a data bank containing data relating to motor vehicles and road users, means for digitally transferring representations of desired licence images to be associated with a particular vehicle and an encoded version of such images to a licence blank, reader means for reading the encoded images, communication between the reader means and a data bank and data display means for output relating to the vehicle with which the encoded images are associated.
