The invention relates to the field of devices for orienting containers 5 and also relates to a safety process which, in the presence of incorrect location of one or a number of containers 5 or of extraneous elements which stress the rotation of fixed parts 6 of the orientator or which conflict with the rotation of movable parts 2 and 3 of the orientator, provides for the shutdown of the orientator when said stressing and/or conflicting actions exceed a preset threshold which it is possible to regulate. The process provides for the automatic discharge of any extraneous elements 5a, typically defective containers, by means of simple dropping into a collection zone 31 which is located under the orientator. The device comprises means 12, 13, 16 and 18 secured to a fixed base 17 of the orientator and arranged so as to detect an initial, brief rotation of said fixed parts 6 in order to order the shutdown of the orientator and, in particular, the shutdown of the rotation of the hopper 2. <IMAGE>
