The invention relates to a method to operate a radio communication system, especially for measuring transmission characteristics of radio channels in a radio communication system comprised of several base stations and at least one additional radio station, wherein the radio communication system has a time slot structure in a time interval and bursts are transmitted in each time slot. According to said method, a channel measuring sequence is also transmitted independent of the transmission of data. The channel measuring sequence is transmitted with constant power in an advantageous manner in the middle of a burst. When a cyclic correlation is used for channel measurement, the individual base stations can use the same channel measuring sequence, wherein the channel measuring sequence having different code phase may also be sent by the different base stations.
