The edge of the drum base (7) acts as a scraper edge (16) for effective separation of sludge components. The centrifuge assembly has a drum base (7) within the drum mantle (5) and over the struts (6) which connect the drum mantle (5) to the hub (8). The drum base (7) is linked to a cylinder (11) with an axial sliding movement on the drum axis (9). The diameter of the edge round the circumference is slightly smaller than the inner diameter of the drum mantle, so that the edge of the drum base acts as a scraper edge (16). A ring-shaped drum cover (14) is secured to the drum base (7) by bolts (13) so that, when the base is lowered, the cover fits over the upper edge (30) of the drum round the mantle. An outer conical catch plate (17) is aligned downwards from the upper edge (30) of the drum mantle (5), diverging outwards, to deflect spun-out liquid into a take-off gutter (21).
