Steel thermomechanical treatment comprises deformation under dynamic and/or static austenite recrystallization conditions and martensitic quenching.. Thermomechanical treatment of steel, for torsion loaded spring elements, comprises heating the starting material at /-50 K/sec. to above the austenite recrystallization temperature, deforming at a temperature at which dynamic and/or static austenite recrystallization occurs and then quenching to martensite and tempering. Preferred Features: The steel is a silicon-chromium steel (e.g. 58SiCrV6) having a carbon content of 0.35-0.75 (especially 0.45-0.65)% and may be microalloyed with vanadium and/or other alloying elements.
