A housing (1) contains a cylindrical chamber into which contaminated air enters via a duct (5). A closed end of the chamber contains a mechanical break-up head (100) for dispersion of liquid droplets. A fluid, preferably water, may be introduced as liquid, steam or ice into the air flow via inlets (23) at the air inlet duct. The chamber and liquid disperser are rotated at high speed causing liquid and wetted particles to be thrown outwards on to the filter walls. A housing (1) contains a cylindrical chamber defined by a cylindrical wall (17). The chamber is closed at one end and at the other end contaminated air enters via a duct (5) in the housing. The closed end contains a mechanical break-up head (100) for dispersion of liquid droplets and for promoting high turbulence. A fluid, preferably water, may be introduced as liquid, steam or ice into the air flow via inlets (23) at the air inlet duct. The chamber and liquid disperser are rotated at high speed causing liquid and wetted particles to be thrown outwards on to the filter walls, where the liquid is coalesced and separated by flowing down the inside of the housing wall to the outlet (4) and the cleaned air is discharged through the perforated bottom (3) of the housing.
