<p>A milling cutter (10) using a wedge (55) to secure an insert (45) within a pocket (50) of the milling cutter wherein the wedge is tapered in both the axial direction and the radial direction. A screw (120) urges the wedge (55) within a tapered cavity (60) to press the insert (45) within the pocket (50) along the axial wedge angle α while rotation of the cutter (10) creates centrifugal forces urging the wedge (55) radially outward, thereby forcing the wedge (55) against the radial wedge surface to further compress the insert (45) within the pocket (50). The insert pocket (50) may be extended to radially encompass the insert (45), thereby providing additional support against centrifugal forces for the insert (45).</p> |
