Candida boidinii strains having a lowered protease activity, in particular, those having been inactivated in the proteinase A or proteinase B activity or both of these proteinase activities; a process for producing a useful foreign protein (for example, cathepsin C) by transforming such a C. boidinii strain with an expression vector containing a gene encoding the foreign protein; proteins having the proteinase A or proteinase B activity; DNAs encoding these proteins; and a secretory signal peptide of proteinase A derived from C. boidinii.
