An electrically assisted power steering system for motor vehicles, comprising an input shaft (2) that interacts with a steering wheel (4). The input shaft (2) is used to transmit steering torque that is required to steer the wheels. An output member interacts with the wheels that are to be steered. An electric motor (7) that enables auxiliary power to be exerted on the input shaft (2) or the output member is included as part of said power steering system. A recognition unit (10) is provided in order to determine the characteristics of the existing version of said vehicle. The characteristics thus determined are supplied to the electronics unit (9) for suitable control of said electric motor (7). The characteristics of the existing version of the vehicle consist of values relating to specific front axle load and/or tyre characteristics of said vehicle.
