In order to control an occupant protection means in a vehicle, the vehicle mass (m) and a dependence between bodywork deformation (s) and the work (A(s)) to be performed for said deformation is made available in a storage. Actual bodywork deformation (s) occurring during an accident is determined depending upon the acceleration (2) detected by an acceleration sensor (1), the work (A) and the vehicle mass (m). The occupant protection means (3) is controlled depending on the actual bodywork deformation (s) or a variable derived therefrom. |
