The invention relates to a method for catalytically removing polycyclic, aromatic nitro, nitroso and/or amino compounds from the exhaust gas (5) of a combustion system, especially of a diesel engine (1), whereby the exhaust gas (5) is brought into contact with a catalytic converter (9) at a temperature ranging from 150 to 600 DEG C. Said catalytic converter comprises a catalytically active material containing titanium dioxide. The polycyclic, aromatic compounds are oxidized on the catalytic converter (9) by oxygen to form nitrogen oxides, carbon dioxides and water.
