Brake mechanism for paper roll accommodated inside paper towel dispenser has two combined brake- and holding elements. The combined braking and holding element (16,18) consists of two cylindrically shaped segments (38,40) attached to both sides of a circular collar (42). The first segment (38) has a bigger diameter and is inserted into the cardboard pipe (14) positioned inside the paper roll (12), the second segment (40) has a smaller diameter and is inserted into a semi-circular cut in the lateral carrying elements (20,22) of the dispenser unit (10). The rotation axle (44) of the second cylinder (40) is positioned parallel to the one (46) of the first segment (38). When the paper (32) is pulled, the cardboard pipe (14) is pressed against the brake and holding element (16,18) at least at two points, causing a friction in order to avoid an uncontrollable dispensing of paper (32).
