The system has a serial field bus with a connected master unit and at least one bus subscriber with at least one safety-related input and/or output device for other system components that can communicate over the field bus. The field bus data flow (15) is updated over the field bus and a system component is switched via the output device in response to the data flow. The data flow contains a serial number (26) associated with the input device and an interruption of the data flow or the serial number results in switching of the associated system components into a safe state.
