A bulk grains mechanical handling system maintains a feed of moist brown coal (1) grains and lumps to a pressurized furnace operating at 5 to 20 bar. The coal is released to a trunk (3) formed by an enclosed pipe chain-conveyer in which the pressure is increased by stages as the conveyer advances towards a pressurized fluidized bed drier (10). The incoming coal is released within the upper zone of the pressurized fluidized bed drier, distributed through the fluidized bed (5). As it falls, the coal impinges on several deflector baffles (9) and forms a heap (7) in the funnel-shaped base zone within the drier. The dried coal is then lifter from the base of the heap by a chain return conveyer (12) pipe in which the air pressure is reduced step by step. The dried coal is then released into a fuel silo (14) where it is stored pending use.
