Apparatus for forming a stream of tobacco comprises an endless air-permeable band (14), a suction chamber (34) from which suction is applied to one side of a lower reach of the band whereby tobacco can be attracted to and held on the opposite side of the lower reach, opposed walls (16, 18) which with the band define a channel (20) along which tobacco is transported by the band and displacers (70) for selectively displacing the lower reach of the band in a direction transverse to its direction of travel for displacing choke tobacco in the channel.
