A power supply for an electronic device having a standby mode

A power supply arrangement for an electric device 100 such as a television which uses standby operation to reduce power consumption. A remote control 12 for controlling the powering up of the device consists of an EM wave generator 13, an infrared generator 113 and a means for receiving an infrared signal 15. The electric device 100 consists of a means for receiving the EM wave 21 and using this signal to switch 23 on and maintain the standby power supply 22 and a means for receiving the infrared signal 10 from the remote control 12 and using this to power up a main power supply circuit 2 of the electric device 100. Both the EM wave and the IR signal are required to power up the device 100 and once the main power circuit 2 is operating an infrared signal is generated 25 by the electric device 100 to instruct the remote control 12 to cease sending the EM wave. A variety of timers are used to turn the device 100 or remote control 12 back to the off state if the correct signals are not received.
