PURPOSE: A tape distinction apparatus for data video home system(DVHS) is provided to distinguish a VHS tape and a S-VHS tape by comparing the detected result value after recording a high or low density data pattern on the tape. CONSTITUTION: The tape distinction apparatus for DVHS comprises a data clock section generating a data clock for recording, a record data generator generating a specific record pattern fitting to the data clock, a reading data comparison section comparing whether the reading data is coincided with the pattern by receiving the read data and the read clock, a micro computer for on/off controlling the switch of the data clock generator according to a normal operation and a tape distinction operation.
