For the extrusion of vegetable particles, together with a bonding agent, the compressed section of the material is initially subjected to steam followed by a passage through a heated channel. The steam is at a temperature of 170-195 degreesC and is at a pressure of 15-19 bar. The steam is delivered along a number of mantle lines at the compressed material held by the housing surface, locally or along linear paths. The heating penetrates through the material in a more intensified action to accelerate the hardening process. The length of the lines of steam delivery points or lines is about twice the length of the compressed material section. The steam is delivered to the compressed material during the intervals between extrusion strokes, while the material is stationary. With a local steam delivery, the gap between the steam points is 50 mm with wall drillings of 3.5 mm diameter. An Independent claim is included for a piston extrusion press assembly with a channel wall tightly round the compressed material (20), of wall segments packed together in a wall section (6). Steam feed channels lead to rows of points or slits radially to the compressed material (20). Preferred Features: The separate wall segments are aligned parallel to the axis of the compressed material (20), giving the channel openings to feed and extract the steam. The wall segments additionally have channels to carry a heating medium, such as heated oil. Steam barriers are in the joints between the wall segments, such as inserted lateral bolts. The drillings into the steamed section (6) of the material passage have an expanding conical or wedge shape. The passage section (6) with the steam feed has a length of two compressed material sections, such as 70 cm.
