PURPOSE: An alcohol is prepared which has a high yield and purity. CONSTITUTION: 1 Mole of magnesium and alkyl halide are reacted in a mixed solvent of 1:0.5- 1:2 ratio of tetrahydrofuran and aromatic hydrocarbon to give Grignard reagent, followed by addition of furfural(formula I; R2 is hydrogen, methyl or ethyl group) and hydrolyzed to give the title alcohol(formula II; R2 is methyl or ethyl group) having 95 % yield and purity, useful as intermediates of flavor intensifier, agricultural chemicals and pharmaceuticals. Thus, 24.3 g of magnesium, 82 ml of tetrahydrofuran and 66 ml of toluene are mixed, added 0.86 ml dibromomethane at 50 degree C, followed by addition of 71 g of ethyl chloride at 20- 60 degree C for 3 hours to give Grignard reagent. 92.3 g of Furfural is dropped into the Grignard reagent at 40- 55 degree C for 1 hour, and added 30 % of aqueous acetic acid solution, followed by agitation and separation to give 117 g of brown furfuryl alcohol.
