A procedure for painting letters and words on the ground or a road surface consists of using a length to width ratio of at least 10 : 1 for the letters and words, which are made up of vertical, horizontal and oblique lines. The apparatus used for the lettering comprises one stencil for the vertical lines, one for the horizontal lines, and at least one for the oblique lines. Each stencil is made from four hinged sections which can be deployed for use and folded for transport and storage.
