PURPOSE: A battery charging device and charging method is provided to enhance the life of the battery by sustaining optimum charge status. CONSTITUTION: The battery charging device comprises: a rectifying/smoothing circuit unit(20) rectifying and smoothing the AC voltage applied from a power supply; a switching unit(30) switching the voltage output from said rectifying/smoothing circuit unit in accordance with a switching control signal; a charging unit(40) applying the DC leveled voltage applied according to the switching of said switching unit to a battery as charging voltage; a charge control unit(50) comparing the battery voltage being charged in said charging unit and a charge reference voltage to control the charging operation of the battery, outputting the switching control signal for intermittently supplying the output voltage of said rectifying/smoothing circuit unit to said charging unit in order to sustain optimum charging voltage status after full charge status, and outputting the control signal for informing the battery charge status to a user; and a display(60) displaying the battery charge status to be presently charged in accordance with the control of said charge control unit.
