Methacrylamide sulphate is prepared by reacting acetone cyanhydrin with concentrated sulphuric acid at a temperature of, for example, from 120 DEG to 160 DEG C. under carbon monoxide at a partial pressure of greater than 1 atmosphere. In a preferred process the acetone cyanhydrin and sulphuric acid are mixed in an autoclave with cooling such that the temperature is not allowed to exceed 80 DEG C., the partial pressure of the carbon monoxide being kept preferably between 10 and 25 atmospheres and the mixture then heated to 130 DEG C. The methacrylamide sulphate may be used as an intermediate in the preparation of methacrylic acid and esters thereof. |
