A tiltable X-ray examination table has a column mounted on it for movement longitudinally of the table, the column having at its lower end an X-ray tube and housing therefor which are so mounted that they are at an angle to the table surface, but arranged so that the X-ray beam itself is normal to the said surface. In the form shown, the table 12 has an upper support surface (not shown) for the patient, a lower portion 40, within which is located the X-ray tube housing 25 enclosing the actual tube 31. The housing is supported at the lower end of a column which is so mounted on the table that it can move longitudinally therealong. The column can also move transversely of the table top, so that the X-ray tube can be brought below any desired point of the support surface. The column also carries a spot-film device above the table top. The X-ray tube and housing are supported at an angle to the table top, as shown, preferably about 15 degrees. This enables the underside of the table to be cut away as shown, the advantage being that the table top can be made lower, and the sloping cut-away portion facilitates ground clearance when the table is tilted. The tube is of the rotating anode type, the anode 35 being frusto-conical in type, and so arranged that the electron beam from cathode 37 strikes the inner surface of the anode. Above the housing 25 is mounted a conical pyramid-shaped screening member 26. The tube housing 25 is fabricated from a number of separate sections joined together, so that the relative positions of the arms 47, 48 through the H.T. cables enter, which are normally opposite to each other, can be altered.
