Acrylic acid (at least 99%) is prepared from a dilute aqueous solution by distillation under vacuum in the presence of an inert stripper which forms with the water vapour a mixture of constant composition which separates on condensation into two layers. Benzene, toluene, esters of acrylic and methacrylic acids, acrylonitrile, monochlorobenzene, carbon tetrachloride and orthodichlorobenzene are suitable. The process may be continuous or discontinuous and a suitable apparatus is described. |
