In a superconductor coil device, e.g. for use in a rotary electric machine, including a thermally insulated superconductor winding 1 supported in a housing 12 by at least one tierod 14 extending therebetween, the tie-rod is connected to one of the two members, e.g. the housing 12, through a coupling which includes a resilient member, e.g. a dished spring 22, whose range of action is at one end positively limited to render the coupling substantially igid when the device is operating at superconducting temperatures but which changes the geometry of the coupling to compensate for differential thermal expansion when the device is at higher temperatures. Adjustment of the tie-rod may be effected laterally by virtue of enlarged housing holes 20 through which its securing screws 21 pass, and axially by means of a screw 18 in a hexagonal nut 17 in a complementary cavity of a guide portion 15. Within a metal casing and bellows 24, 25 of the tie-rod are thermal insulation and a coolant duct 23. The parts 15 ...19 may be thermally insulated and liquid nitrogen cooled.
